Advanced Flexibility Series : The safe and sustainable route

  • Ume Yoga 1501 Broadway Oakland, CA, 94612 United States (map)

Emma believes that safe flexibility comes from strength. This workshop consists of two sessions, the first focusing on range of motion in the hips and the second on flexibility of the spine during backbending. Both sessions will be a combination of flow, workshop, and yin postures. The first week is hips. We will start with a flow that emphasizes setting a strong and safe foundation for postures that require a deep internal rotation in the hips. Then, we’ll flow and subsequently workshop postures that require a deep external rotation of the hips. Class will culminate in 25 minutes of supported yin postures that emphasize hip flexibility.

In the second week, we will discuss how to safely develop flexibility for advanced back bending postures. This class will start off with flow that emphasizes strength particularly through the ribs, low back, pelvic floor, and core. We will also do work to open up the quadriceps, lats, and triceps. Then we will workshop advanced backbending postures. Class will culminate in 20 minutes of yin style forward folds and spinal twists to reset the body.

Price - $30

For me there is nothing more joyous, empowering, or therapeutic as movement.

Why yoga?      For me there is nothing as joyous, empowering, or therapeutic as movement. I find happiness and grace in big sweeping movements, and power and strength in challenging postures. I think physical asana allows us to connect with our emotional and spiritual selves as well as our own innate healing abilities in a way that just isn’t possible for me using thought or words. . ..      Who or what inspires you?      My students. When a student accomplishes a new challenging posture for the first time, it’s sheer magic and makes me feel like I too can do anything!      Three Words that Describe your Teaching Style      Style: Vibrant, playful, and warm.      Where is your calm place?      On my yoga mat, in the company of my loved ones, or near bodies of water.      Current guilt pleasure?      Pizza, astrology, following the “gffkennel” golden retriever friends forever Instagram, and binge-watching telenovelas to practice my Spanish (¡qué oso!)
